Transmission tunnel / transmissions tunnel

When talking to one of the previous owners, Anders Kåhrström who owned that car during 27 years, he told me that the car  have had a coalition with a Moose.

We have seen evidence of this coalition when restoring the car. A further indication was that the car was owned by an Insurance company, Zurich, for about a year in 1971-72 and  I would have thought that this may well be due to the collition. When the front was replaced there was a lot of filling and when removed it was clear that the from have had quite a beating. The front floor panels that are in an angel up to towards the engine compartment as well as the engine compartment itself had aslo sims of a mighty impact, as did the transmission tunnel.  This has all bean dealt with with exception of the transmission tunnel. After posting on P1800 Face to ask if some one had a transmission tunnel for sale, and receiving offers between £100 (in Sweden) and £300 (in Denmark) we decided to take out the one I’ve got and repair it.  The other two on offer where good solid metal, however they needed many hours of cleaning as they appeared to have 50 years of undersea and vax on them.  The fastest route seemed to be a repair. This turned out to be the right decision as the disassembly, repair, cleaning and re-fitting took only 13 hours. Replacing it and cleaning another transmission tunnel is likely to have taken more time.

Late yesterday afternoon my Volvo arrived at P&K Panels where Andy (left in the picture) with team meats up to go through what needs to be done. Now the body is structurally sound and there is no rust, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Stripping back to bare metal, wire wehling the engine compartment, interior and luggage compartment and do all the led repairs and preparations to be able to paint in the original Volvo colour no. 71 which the car had when it left the factory in 1966. As it’s a lot of work I thought it would be appropriate with before and after photos not only of the car but of the team as well 🙂

A major milestone

I went to Tricket Welding yesterday whilst they where finishing their structural welding work. The pictures and videos (links to be inserted within the next couple of days)  below does not show everything as the whole under side wasn’t stone chipped at the time I was there an filmed.   Work done by the guys at Tricket Welding includes:

  • Scraping and wire wheeling the under side of the body
  • Lifting out the engine
  • Fitting new:
  •       Cross Member
  •       Battery Tray
  •       RH Front Wing
  •       LH Front quarter panel
  •       RH+LH Inner, Middle and Outer Sills
  •       RH+LH Inner and Outer Wheel Arches
  •       RH+LH Inner and Outer Rear Quarter Panels
  •       Rear Outer Valance
  • Repairing, building new:
  •      RH+LH Front Chassis repairs
  •      LH upper part of Front Wing and section under front window and upper A-post
  •      RH+LH Front Floor plan repairs
  •      RH+LH New lower part of A-post
  •      RH+LH B-post repair
  •      RH+LH Rear Floor plan repairs towards Inner Wheel House
  •      Inner rear Valance repairs
  • Inspection of the whole body with the engine out and small repairs (like filling holes after stabilising bars and aftermarket equipment)
  • Stone chipping the underside of the car

Thank you Nigel, Neil and team for a Great job with good attention to detail. Thanks also for great advice during the process. You have been a pleasure to work with!

Like Christmas time / Julafton

Today I received a lot of parts from VP-Autoparts to my car.  Amazing that you still can get original Dashboard padding to a 48 year old car!  Took some time to sort all the nuts and bolts and small fitting details. Its great that there are part numbers and drawings available. Need to clear the kitchen table before my wife returned home 😉

Grill frame / Grillen

There where two dents on the grill frame. Very irritating – they have to go. The guys at Dorsetware de-chromed them for me so that the dents could be fixed. Now when the chrome is gone,  the dents can hardly be seen! I did already know it, but with chrome finish , the surface must be 100% before its chromed, everything shows.

Preparations for Electroplating / Förberedelse för El-förzinkning

I think those are all the items I want Electroplated!  I have delivered them to Dorsetware in Hamworthy Poole. They do all sort of finishes. I have researched a bit what should be “Silver”, “Yellow” and “Black” finish and I hope I got it right 🙂  I want it to be as the original if possible. I realise I probably will get it back in a big pile so I’ve measured and Photographed it all in order to be able to reconcile the parts when I get them back.  I have also sorted all the fasteners and, grommets and bushings in small plastic bags to be able to put them back.  In spite those preparations I wonder If I will be able to sort it all out at the end…

Body work continues / Svetsarbetena fortsätter

The areas under the right hand front wing has been stone chip treated so the wing is now ready to go on. Same with the rear wheel arches and valance, inner and outer wheel arches and inner and outer valance finished, rust treated and stone chip treated. The plan is now to have all the structural repairs done by end of next week so that the car can go into the body shop to be stripped to bare metal and sprayed. Left now is the left hand front wing and the cross member plus some small areas of the floor.
